TimesMachine is an archive service by The New York Times which archives more then 100 years of the newspaper of record. It is interesting to see how is handled the scanning of printed text - when you hover a column of the paper, you will get a zoomed version of it. The zoomed version is made with sophisticated HTML, CSS and Javascript.
